Creating Creativity

Odin in my duckling costume

Hello friends.
This picture above is of my nephew Odin (aged 4). My sister sent me this photo after I parted with a number of costumes from my childhood ballet days. The one he is wearing is a duckling costume my Mum made for me when I was four and I’ve been hanging on to it for years. There are some great black and white photos of me in it that my dad took when he was at art school which I may find as I sift through all the stuff I’ve got whilst moving house…yes I’m still moving house!
I just thought it was wonderful how letting go of things that have been hanging around for ages that hold sentimental attachment can go on and have a new life.
I’d much rather Odin run around the backyard in my costume pretending to be a duckling and using his creativity and imagination than have it hanging around in a cupboard at my place where nobody uses or sees it. It just goes to show you how letting go of objects can inspire creativity. By the way, my sister is a dance artist and my nephew has a whole wardrobe of amazing costumes from my and her ballet school days. If that kid doesn’t end up as an actor, dancer or artist I’ll be very surprised!!.

Spoon me

image

Hello folks, Here’s some garden herb markers I made recently using old wooden spoons. I’m moving house and its amazing what you accumulate! This was not even all the spoons I found laying around. I painted them with white exterior house paint…. (Actually I must confess I had so many I had started using them as paint stirrers so some already had paint on them!) When the white dried I found some blue exterior grade paint and did the words and decoration. I must confess I saw this idea elsewhere and its not wholly my idea but I can’t for the life of me remember where. They are going to look awesome in the summer herb garden at my new place. Can’t wait.

Athena

image

This is a glimpse from the sketchbook I started when I returned from Greece and Turkey recently. I haven’t had a chance to do a lot of drawing as I’ve been busy trying to “get my life together”.
I based this drawing on a sculpture of Athena from the Archeological Museum in Athens. I love the mythology of Athena the goddess of wisdom. She’s one awesome chic.

Protest Graffiti Istanbul

Protest Graffiti Istanbul

Here is some fab graffiti from my recent trip to Istanbul. I loved Istanbul!! Such a fabulous place, so cosmopolitan, cultural, creative and interesting.

I love the hilarity of the ‘Yo Ahmed’ wall, but my favourite is the Istanbul fists. You may have heard about recent protests in Istanbul against the government there and I spoke to many people who were protesting a wide range of concerns, at the core of which were issues of freedom of the press, freedom of expression, freedom of assembly, and the government’s encroachment on Turkey’s secularism.
Art is often a method for expression and commenting on the social issues of the day and graffiti particularly, is often used in this way. The U.K artist Banksy springs to mind as one of the most well known of this kind of work.
If you want to know more about the Turkish protests there is much to read on the internet about this issue which despite a lack of International media coverage is continuing.

Quiltathon

image

Here’s a lovely photo of me with my cousin’s kids- Jasper (aged 5)and Scarlett (aged 3). I stayed at their house recently and thought whilst watching T.V. I’d do a bit of work on this quilt. I’m making it for my sister who is pregnant with her second child due in February. I was quite unprepared for the excitement it would engender in the kids.

Jasper wanted to sew and Scarlett wanted to cut the thread. Who am I to argue with this sort of enthusiasm? I got Jasper sewing through the edge of the wadding that was sticking out and I would eventually cut off. This only entertained him for a while and then he wanted to do what I was doing!! Kids are so clever and don’t miss a trick. So I thought ‘bugger it’ I’ll let him do a bit of sewing on the actual quilt. My sister will love it because it will have the kids work on it. Of course his stitches were massive but afterwards I incorporated them into a random stitch pattern by adding more of my own.
Scarlett is obsessed with pink and purple and went through my embroidery tin getting all those tones out. A good lesson in colour I thought! She wanted to use the scissors to cut up stuff, so I got her cutting the embroidery thread into lengths for me. There were a few unusable short bits but I trained her up to do the right length and measure one piece the same as the other.
They both want me to make them a quilt now too! So, cute!! And they want to do more sewing. So, next time I go over to their place I might bring some felt and large needles for them to have a go with.
I had heaps of fun. I was feeling a bit down after my return from traveling overseas and the ensuing ‘back to reality’ issues but this really made me happy. It made me remember that family is why you come home and that the smallest things can bring you joy at the most unexpected moments.

Studio Space

Studio Space

This is part of what my old studio space looked like before I moved house. I’m hoping to re-created the same vibe in my new room. At the moment it’s just piles and piles of stuff. I need order, I need organization, I need to see the possibilities before me! Hopefully, soon with a new coat of paint and some artwork on the walls I will feel inspired. Just seeing all my art materials spread everywhere makes me think I need to start using them or start culling them!!
