Garden of Unearthly Delights

Garden of Unearthly Delights

This is what the Garden of Unearthly Delights looked like last night at the Adelaide Fringe!! I’m not sure anymore if people actually realise the Fringe is an ARTS event not just a drinking event!! SO much debauchery, drunkenness and quite a bit of anti social behaviour after the fabulous gig by Hannnah Gadsby made me think of this painting by Hieronymus Bosch.

Critics are divided on the meaning but one interpretation by American writer Peter S. Beagle describes it as an “erotic derangement that turns us all into voyeurs, a place filled with the intoxicating air of perfect liberty”. (Wikipedia)

Art historians and critics frequently interpret the painting as a didactic warning on the perils of life’s temptations.(Wikipedia)

I don’t know about you but it certainly felt like I was in hell last night…or maybe I’m just an aging artist that thinks arts festivals should just be mostly about art!!
